Biomechanical assessment and gait analysis in Battersea

How your feet and lower limbs move affects far more than your feet. If you have recurring pain in your feet, knees, hips or lower back, a biomechanical assessment can help find the cause.

What is biomechanics?

Biomechanics is the study of how your body moves. Small differences in foot structure or the way you walk and run can place uneven stress on your joints and soft tissues, and over time this can contribute to pain in the feet, ankles, knees, hips and lower back. A biomechanical assessment looks at the whole picture to understand how your movement may be linked to your symptoms.

What the assessment involves

A podiatrist will examine the structure and movement of your feet and lower limbs, assess your posture and watch how you walk (gait analysis). We will discuss your symptoms, activities and footwear, then explain what we find in plain terms. Depending on the results, recommendations may include footwear advice, stretching and strengthening, and orthoses (custom or prefabricated insoles) to support and improve how your foot functions. The aim is to address the underlying mechanics, not just mask the symptom.

Who it helps

People with recurring foot or heel pain, runners and active people with overuse injuries, those with knee, hip or lower back pain that may relate to foot function, and anyone whose footwear wears unevenly or who finds certain activities uncomfortable.

Common questions

Biomechanics FAQs

What is the difference between biomechanical assessment and gait analysis?

Gait analysis, looking at how you walk or run, is one part of a fuller biomechanical assessment that also examines the structure and movement of your feet and lower limbs.

Will I need orthotics?

Not always. Orthoses are one option among several, and we recommend them only when they are likely to help.

Can foot mechanics cause knee or back pain?

How your feet load the ground can influence the joints above them, so foot function is sometimes a contributing factor. An assessment helps clarify whether it is relevant for you.

Is this useful for runners?

Yes. It is often helpful for recurring or overuse running injuries. See also our sports injuries page.
