Why diabetes and feet matter
Diabetes can reduce sensation and affect circulation in the feet, which means small problems such as cuts, blisters, corns or infections can develop without being noticed and may take longer to heal. This is why regular foot care and assessment are an important part of looking after yourself when you live with diabetes.
What a diabetic foot assessment involves
A podiatrist will check the health of your feet, including circulation and sensation, look for areas of pressure, hard skin or skin changes, and discuss your footwear and daily foot care. We will explain what we find and agree how often you should be seen. Routine treatments such as safe nail care and reduction of hard skin are carried out professionally, which is far safer than self-treating when you have diabetes. We will also advise on what to look out for between visits and when to seek help quickly.
When to seek help promptly
If you notice a cut, blister, colour change, swelling, an area that is hot or painful, or any break in the skin that is not healing, do not wait. Contact us, your GP or your diabetes team promptly. For signs of serious infection or a rapidly worsening wound, seek urgent medical care, and in an emergency call 999.
